Secret Sauna is a wood-fired sauna cabin perched on the banks of the River Waveney.
How does it work?
- Secret Sauna is available for private hire for adults (over 16s only) in groups of 2 – 6 people. Your group will have exclusive use of the sauna and our little woodland retreat. *
- Book your slot via our booking platform.
- 24 Hours before your booking, you’ll receive an email with details of how to find us and what to bring.
- We have a car park and bike racks, both of which are a short walk (around 300m) through the woods. You can also reach us by river.
- When you arrive, you’ll be met by one of our team. They’ll show you to the riverside sauna, brief you on some safety info and will then leave you in peace to enjoy our little woodland retreat here in the Waveney Valley.
- Please note that bookings are for personal and private use only. If you’re interested in collaborating with us on an event, workshop or retreat, please get in touch.

Secret Sauna is just outside Bungay on Wainford Road, right next to The Silo. The sauna’s hidden on the banks of the River Waveney on a private river island and is accessible by car, foot, bike or river. Full address and directions are shared once you book.
Booking is for a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 6. The sauna cabin itself fits 5 comfortably, 6 people if you’re happy to be cosy. For groups of 6, we ask that guests select the Secret Sauna Plus Campfire as this gives you more seating options outside and means the group can warm up in the sauna in rotation. As it’s a longer session, you’ll all get a chance to enjoy some decent time inside the sauna.
Yes, we offer eGift cards of various amounts. They’re available here, and can be emailed direct to your recipient. Our vouchers do not expire.
It’s easy. If you have a 16 digit voucher code number, you can use this in the box marked ‘Gift card’ (just below the card details). In order to redeem your gift card, it must cover the total amount due. If you have an old style voucher (8 letters starting with a V), OR if you wish to book a package worth more than the value of your gift card, please follow these simple steps:
STEP 1: Choose your date and time by looking at our calendar (click here to see availability).
STEP 2: Email us at [email protected] or call 07971 799390 with your time slot and sauna package option, full name, email address, mobile number, voucher value and code.
STEP 3: We will call you to take payment for the difference, over the phone via our secure payment system, and will book you in our end. You will receive a text and email confirmation when that’s all done for you!
Yes you can! If you plan to arrive by water, we ask that you let us know in advance so we know to expect you on the riverbank, rather than waiting for you in our car park. We will give you specific coordinates of how to find the correct place
Water bottles and towels. We suggest x2 towels per person. One to sit on and one to dry off with. You can refill your water bottle on site as we provide fresh tap water for each booking. Warm clothes, swimming gear and torches are also recommended.
Yes! We offer beautiful picnic boxes, filled with local and seasonal ingredients. Home-made to order, these boxes are vegetarian (we can also cater for vegan and gf), and will include everything you need for a relaxed, riverside feast, including plates and cutlery. Included inside: a seasonal salad, savoury item (such as a frittata or savoury muffin) and something a little more treaty; cake or flapjack. These packages are not available via our booking site and need to be ordered directly through us in advance: £140 for two people and £175 for four people, including the sauna part of your experience too. To book a picnic package, or to upgrade your existing booking please email us.
Afraid not. Instead, we have a cold water bucket shower. Very rustic, and most guests love this bit. It’s a good alternative for cooling down if dipping in the river isn’t your thing.
Yes, we have a simple compost toilet on site, which is a very short walk from the sauna. Please note that this toilet is shared with customers from The Silo Cafe.
We do offer evening bookings but the last start time for bookings varies on the time of year as it depends on available light. We are totally off-grid and lighting is limited. We never let guests arrive in total darkness and our bookings are set so that guests arrive no later than one hour before it’s dark.
Yes! Come rain or shine, 12 months of the year. However, our winter opening hours differ from our summer hours, owing to shorter days and limited light on site.
Secret Sauna is open throughout the year, come rain or shine. We suggest guests come prepared for all weathers. We don’t close in bad weather, only in very rare circumstances (such as severe storms or when the river is in flood).
We have a small undercover area but generally you can take shelter inside the sauna itself. If the forecast is looking particularly bad in the days leading up to your appointment you can reschedule up to 48 hrs in advance.
You can reschedule free of charge up to 48 hours before your appointment. You can do this yourself by clicking on ‘reschedule or cancel’ in your confirmation email.
Sometimes the system gets a little glitch and thinks you have booked when you haven’t (this is because it will hold your booking in the system or in your cart for a while before it is released again, even if you’ve not paid for it). If the appointment you were trying to book appeared available at first, but when you tried to process the payment, the slot disappeared and you haven’t received a confirmation email, it means that your appointment is not confirmed. If you experience this glitch on our system we suggest you wait 10 mins, close the tab and reopen, ideally in a new browser, or better still a different device. This always seems to fix it. You will always receive a confirmation email and text message when your appointment has been confirmed. Please check your spam if this doesn’t appear in your inbox.
Yes, we have a waiting list system in-built into our booking platform, so if there’s a specific day and time that you’d like to book that’s already booked up, you can add your details and receive an alert if other guests cancel or reschedule. You’ll find this at the bottom of the booking section below the time slots (‘Don’t see your preferred date or time?’)
Sure. We consider groups of up to 8. More than that and ‘Sauna Island’ starts to get rather crowded. For larger groups of more than 6 people, we ask guests to book the campfire package as this gives you more seating options and a longer period to take turns to enjoy the sauna.
Sorry, no children or dogs!
There is river access, via some steps. This is to be used at the guests own risk. We do not allow swimming after storms or when the water levels are exceptionally high and the currents are strong.
The river is very deep in places and can be unpredictable. Therefore, swimming generally is recommended for strong and experienced swimmers only. We cannot take responsibility for the water quality. We’re doing all we can to get Anglian Water to clean up their act but at the end of the day, the river is surrounded on both banks by farmland for many, many miles.
If you do decide to swim we suggest you keep your head above water and avoid swallowing any river water. We have a refreshing cold water bucket shower available all year round for all groups. Most guests find this is an excellent, and far safer alternative to getting in the river. Just as invigorating too!
Lots of great places locally.
The Locks Inn just downstream of us in Geldeston is always top of our list for special places to visit. It’s a community-owned pub, right on the river. In our view (like most remote places) it’s well worth the walk/paddle or row to reach The Locks.
Etude Coffee at The Silo – on the same site as Secret Sauna – is open Thursday to Sunday and serves awesome coffee and pastries.
Other good eateries in and around Bungay include Suffolk Stonehouse for excellent pizza, Fiano for Mediterranean, The Olive Tree for authentic Italian, The Fleece Inn for decent pub grub, Earsham Street Café for lunch or tea. Or for take-aways, head to Front Room or Earsham Street deli for coffees, pastries, salads and sandwiches.
